We are delighted to announce that Handspring Puppet Company have donated Joey, the original West End puppet from War Horse, the National Theatre’s award-winning stage adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s novel. On stage, Joey is operated by three puppeteers the Head, the Heart and the. Using the Japanese Bunraku ‘exposed’ style of puppetry, they are costumed and visible to the audiences but make Joey the focus of attention. Joey is brought to life onstage in War Horse by three puppeteers, known as the Head, the Heart and the Hind. ![]() ![]() Two of the co-founders, Adrian Kohler and Basil Jones, continue to run the company. This Joey, from the West End transfer of War Horse, has performed in over 1,640 shows and was retired from the production in March 2013. Handspring Puppet Company was founded in 1981 by four graduates of the Michaelis School of Fine Art in Cape Town, South Africa. Joey and other puppets share the stage with an ensemble of actors, a signature style of the Handspring Puppet Company who designed and created the puppets. ![]() War Horse, the National Theatre’s stage adaptation of the book by Michael Morpurgo, tells the story of the horses sold to the army for service in the First World War.
